Internet Explorer Remote Dos (Memory Access Violation)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY
Internet Explorer is a very popular web browser written by Microsoft. A
bug in the way IE handles paths to drives in the body of HTML tags can
lead to memory access.
DETAILS
Vulnerable Systems:
* Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800
By using onLoad and window.location it is possible to direct IE to open a
connection, file or web page, during the loading of the body of the HTML
code (NOTE: The onLoad directive can be applied to almost any tag).
For example, directing IE to open a file on the local file system is done
in the following manner: file://c:\filename
If the link contains an invalid drive letter encoded in hexadecimal
values, the mentioned vulnerability is triggered. This vulnerability
overwrites 3 registers ECX, EDX, and EDI.
When we use an abnormal drive name we control the first 16bits of EDX and
EDI. When the web page with the malicious code loads, the three registers
are overwritten which also results in corruption the IE Entries' registry.
Example:
By directing a user to the following path: \xff:\filename (it is also
possible to pass hex values instead of a filename), it is possible to
trigger the vulnerability.
