WebSight Directory System Vulnerable to Cross Site Scripting Bug
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUMMARY
WebSight is a portal/directory system in the same vein as the Open
Directory Project, Yahoo! or any of the ther big webportals. Originally
created as the portal/directory system or the Electronic Music World
website, now available as open source. A security vulnerability in the
product allows attackers to cause the product to return to the user
possilbly malicious HTML and JavaScript content (the was provided by 3rd
parties).
DETAILS
Vulnerable systems:
WebSight Directory System version 0.1
Immune systems:
WebSight Directory System version 0.1.1
When a user submits a new link (for approving by an administrator), none
of the inputs is checked for malicious code. This makes it possible for a
malicious attacker to be able to insert JavaScript that will be executed
whenever an administrator checks the submitted data.
Proof-of-concept:
<script>bad=window.open("http://example.com/portal/administration/userman.php?uname=black&newpass=hat&submituser=ok", "bad","width=1,height=1");bad.close();</script>
This will cause the administrator unwantingly to create a new
administrator named "black" with password "hat".
Fix:
Upgrade to version 0.1.1 or later.
Vendor status:
The author reacted in a very deserving way. After less than 10 hours there
was a new version avaiable which filters mailicious code.
