  Buffer Overflow Found in Outlook Express for Macintosh


Outlook express for Macintosh is a mail client developed by Microsoft.
This mail client has a problem with handling of body strings, and buffer
overflow occurs when sending it long strings without carriage return code.

When the Macintosh version of Outlook Express receives an email, it will
try to parse it, if the email contains a long line, a buffer overflow will
occur. Further the program will be unable to issue a valid "DELE" to POP3
server. This would cause the email to persist despite attempts to delete
The impact of this vulnerability may be the ability to execute arbitrary
code on the target machine, simply by sending them a specially crafted
e-mail (there is no need to open the affected e-mail for this attack to

Outlook Express version 5.02

Immune systems:
Outlook Express version 5.03

Vender status:
Microsoft was fixed this problem in version 5.03 English. Other language
versions are still under development.
