    Re -
'I've tried that approach and failed. For example, the
current version of Microsoft's PowerPoint 2003 Viewer (as
downloaded yesterday) crashes, if you replace its vulnerable
gdiplus.dll with an updated version of the DLL.'

I have replaced the powerpoint viewer dll my currently use - version
    6.0.3260.0 with the version from my 0ffice 2003 SP1 folder - 6.0.3264 - and
the viewer does not crash for me, neither does any MSI repair process return
the earlier dll. I have tried this on several of my xpsp2 machines (luckily
I've just completed a rollout and sp2 is standard now), with several
powerpoint files and across reboots. Is there something I'm missing?
