Well, firstly let me point out that I have been called many names as a Network Administrator, few of them usable here.

If a corporate environment has deployed Automatic Updates, then they have already experienced Windows 2000 SP4 (thanks BBunin@ups-mi.com) and XP SP1 (thanks Dave Maller). Ok, so maybe they deployed Automatic Updates later...

Either way, automatic updates tells you that you're asking MS to keep your systems secure, and nobody can deny that XP SP2 is Microsoft's best effort at doing just that. If you don't want XP SP2 downloaded 4500 times to your 4500 XP desktops, better redeploy Automatic Updates configured to point at a (preferably) existent SUS server (or if you don't have one, a non-existent IP address.)

Just how would you get to the majority of home systems, who are after all the ones attacking the majority of corporate desktops, otherwise? Pushing XP SP2 via AU is the first best step at getting it broadly deployed, and that should be all of our goals...if not in your corporate environment then at least in the home user market.

I'm really at a loss as to how you can call it "reckless" when SUS has been around for more than 2 years, AU for more than 1, and the push of 2 service packs from WU already behind us.

    Cheers,
    Russ - NTBugtraq Editor
