    I have recently installed five new desktop computers. On two of the five
    systems, Windows Update is not working. When I access the WU website, and
    click "Scan for updates", I get an error page:
    ========================
    "Windows Update Error"

    "Windows Update has encountered an error. this may be due to a discrepancy
    in your computer's time setting."

    "To check your date and time setting:
    1. On the taskbar, double-click the time.
    2. Verify that the date and time is correct."
    ================================

    The date and time are correct - I even synchronized the time with one of the
    atomic clocks. I tried rebooting, and disabling Automatic Updates, but to
    no avail.

    In both cases, this behavior started right AFTER the Windows Update client
    was updated by the Windows Update website. I checked the file versions
    before and after:

    wuauclt.exe went from version "5.4.3630.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)"
    to "5.4.3790.17 built by: lab04_n"
    wuaueng.dll also went from version "5.4.3630.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)"
    to "5.4.3790.17 built by: lab04_n"
    wuauserv.dll remained at version "5.4.3630.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920)"
    wupdmgr.exe remained at version "5.4.2600.0 (XPClient.010817-1148)"

    Both systems also display only two Automatic Updates policies in the policy
    editor, as though they were running an earlier client, before Windows 2000
    SP3 and Windows XP SP1.

    I found no relevant information on the Windows Update troubleshooting page,
    or in the knowledgebase.
