One of the discussions that occurred at the NTBugtraq Retreat this year
was the idea of holding a "Personal Firewall Day". A fuller explanation
is being worked up, but basically the idea is to have a day where we
blitz the public with the idea of getting, installing, and enabling a
Personal Firewall. The more people we reach the more Trojans and bots we
get rid of, and we reduce the number of systems available to worms and
their ilk.
The idea is the brain-child of my cohort Paul Robertson, who
co-moderates the Firewall-Wizards mailing list. Supporting the idea at
that meeting was ZoneLabs and Symantec. We're in the process of crafting
the message, action plan, and gathering support from Vendors.
I'd like to make the call to all those in the media who follow this
list, as your willingness to participate in this one day event will make
all of the difference. What we need from the media is a willingness to
take a message outside of the techie realm of your publications and into
the more general public arena. Home page stories with links to the
Personal Firewall Day website where we plan to have product listings,
instructions, explanations, etc...
Meanwhile, in furtherance of this goal I've prepared a listing of all
Personal Firewall Products, software and hardware-based;
http://www.ntbugtraq.com/pfp.asp
I'd like you to take a look at it and let me know if I've missed a
product. The page has the criteria I'm using to define Personal
Firewalls, and several links for you to send me messages about
additions, products that shouldn't be listed, etc...
On November 10th I will put up a poll page so you can vote on the
products listed, those you liked and those you thought didn't work.
Once the Personal Firewall Day information is better organized I'll send
you another note with more information on how you can participate.
Cheers,
Russ - NTBugtraq Editor

Marcus Ranum's new book "The Myth of Homeland Security" is now out and
is available from http://www.amazon.com/ranum In this hard-hitting
review of the homeland security business, Ranum shows us how the problem
is vastly harder than it's being made to sound, and how special
interests, *** covering, and bureaucracy are threatening to derail any
chance of making progress.
