Hello,
It looks like there might be possible confusion over the security
support policy for Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6a. Lets see if I can
help clarify the questions below.
The Microsoft Support Lifecycle defines the support policies for all
Microsoft's products. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle explains
the policies and provides the end of support dates for our products.
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6a extended support phase ended June 30,
2003. This means that after this date, Microsoft would no longer create
security fixes for this platform, nor automatically post to WU, etc.
Several security fixes were released after this date, such as MS03-026
and MS03-039, that Microsoft determined were critical and had a broad
impact, thus an exception was made and the fixes were provided on NT 4.0
Workstation SP6a.
MS03-040 is an Internet Explorer security patch. At the time this patch
was released, Internet Explorer running on NT4 Workstation was
supported through December 2003. That's why folks see this available in
WU.
Windows Update will provide security patches for operating systems and
their components. However, for security patches on Exchange, Office,
and other non-operating system applications, today those aren't provided
via Windows Update. Rather, you would need to use Office Update, or go
directly to http://support.microsoft.com/security and download the patch
directly.
Last week, Steve Ballmer announced that Microsoft will be providing
security patch support for both Windows 2000 SP2, and Windows NT4 SP6a
through June 30, 2004. You can expect to see any security patches
released for these two platforms available via WU through this date.
Microsoft is researching ways to improve the security patch discovery
and installation experience for our customers in the future.
If you have any questions regarding the support lifecycle of a product,
please feel free to email LIFPDQA@microsoft.com and my team will be glad
to assist.
Regards,
Kathy Prince

Well here's why Russ...looks like up to MS03-040 is included in
windowsupdate for WinNT 4 Workstation....but that's it. Not sure if
you'll just ignore this one like you did my last one...guess I pissed
you off.

Hello James,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.
I am Angela and I understand that you want to know why the MS03-041
through
MS03-045 security patches are not appearing on the Windows Update Site
when you access it using Windows NT4 Workstation.
James, since support for Windows NT4 Workstation has already been
discontinued by Microsoft, the Windows Update Site has also ceased to
support Windows NT for its services. In order to obtain the security
patches that you mentioned, I suggest that you download them from the
Microsoft Download Center.
For your convenience, I am providing links to the articles discussing
the issues addressed by the said security patches. The articles also
contain the links to download the files.

That's fine and dandy....however, you DO offer the patches and they are
listed as critical. I can and have installed on a few machines...but I
was wondering why windowsupdate didn't work any more.

Hello James,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.
My name is Raphael and I understand that there are no critical updates
showing for your Windows NT 4 Workstation. I am a Customer Service
Representative, not a Technical Support Professional and I will be
directing you to the most appropriate area so that you can receive
support.
For Microsoft to deliver the highest quality of support possible, it is
necessary to expire support for discontinued products and apply those
resources to support the latest developments and technologies from
Microsoft. Warranty support is no longer available for Windows NT.
