    Ok, I've had over 20 replies from others having precisely the same problems with MS03-043, so let's take it as confirmed that there is a problem (iows, you can stop sending messages indicating you too have experienced this.)

    I've had people indicate they have this problem on W2K, XP, and Windows Server 2003. I've had people indicate that it both did and didn't work on W2K SP4 boxes, so I don't believe the problem is associated with any particular set of binaries. One person indicated they had problems with IIS and Lotus Notes Servers, but did not have problems with their Domain Controllers. Another person had the Messenger Service disabled during the update, and tried re-enabling it to see if the problem went away...it didn't.

    One person indicated they had the CIS "Win2kSrvGold_R1.0.inf" template applied, and believed the problem was related to user rights. Others have indicated they have templates applied, so its possible it is related to this. However, others have indicated that they were able to apply patches prior to this one with no problems, and wonder why the behavior has changed (suggesting that templates were in effect before, so they shouldn't be the reason.)

    Eddy himself said;

    "There is a common denominator to the boxes I am having issues with. They are locked down further then the ones that work. Why it is an issue now and wasn't before, I am not sure. (These are not the first patches I have put on it.) Exactly what setting is causing it I don't know yet."

    Another person indicated they tried applying the patch separately via Windows Update, and that failed also.

    Cheers,

    Marcus Ranum's new book "The Myth of Homeland Security" is now out and

    review of the homeland security business, Ranum shows us how the problem
    is vastly harder than it's being made to sound, and how special
    interests, *** covering, and bureaucracy are threatening to derail any
    chance of making progress.
