Russ,
Just wanted to give you a quick word of thanks for hosting this list, based
on something that just happened:
When Blaster happened a few weeks ago, my main customer disabled all
dial-in and vpn access to their network for the better part of a week until
they were sure everyone was patched (thanks to this list I had been
forewarned). They have been running (probably continuous) scans of their
network for unpatched machines since then, and had warned everyone that
remote access would be permanently revoked for anyone found without a
patched machine.
I followed your advice yesterday by updating my machines to MS03-039. I
was dialed-up this morning to their network when I got a call from their
admin saying their scan just reported my machine as being
unpatched. Normally, my heart would have started pounding and sweat
started rolling, as this would mean the end of remote access for me, and
therefore the end of the contract. However, I had followed the postings of
other users yesterday who had also been admonished for not being patched
because of outdated scanners, and immediately realized this was the
case. As soon as I explained that I was patched not only with 03-026 but
also with 03-039 and that their scanning tool had to be updated, they
congratulated me on being up to date and hung up.
Thanks again for making this important information available in such a
succinct format.
Bob M..
