After a week of testing, Microsoft has confirmed, under case ID
    SRX030502602216, that tapes created with 2003 Server's ntbackup.exe cannot
be used in any previous version of Windows short of using the ntbackup.exe
from 2003 Server in the older version of Windows. I have been informed
that the case has now been escalated to a level where they will look at
code and determine if a fix will be issued. MS has also told me there
would be a KB article in the coming days, though they would not guarantee
    it would be public.

Again, my concern here is that a company may deploy 2003 Server and assume
they can restore data on a 2000 Server or XP Pro box should the 2003 Server
fail. This is current NOT the case barring their use of our work around
(which has it's own set of problems, see previous posts), though short of a
written letter from MS allowing the use of 2003's ntbackup.exe on non-2003
boxes I cannot advise anyone go this route.
