was just posted to the web. apparently this issue affects all supported MS
operating systems, not just XP.

so we now know a workaround. you can change the "Version" string under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608500} from whatever the Sun
installer made it back to "5,0,3805,0" and you will no longer see the
problem. props to josh birnbaum for deducing the source of the issue on
his own.
