If this is a duh, please dont flame me, but I have not seen it posted
anywhere so far, even on MS' site.

Little known secret: Windows NT/2K/Xp will only use the first 16mb to load
both the System HIve on the Local Machine and all the OS (NTOS and Kernel
and etc.). Ok that is not a secret.

But did you know you can reduce the size of your hives? If you are a power
user, and load and unload software a lot, it can get bloated. ANd if it
gets too bloated, you get a System.ced cannot load error.

SO what do you do?

You can optimize your loading and system by copying the old system hive to a
new name (through Recovery console), and then loading it into Regedt32 as a
new Hive. Then just save it! Dont do anything to it, just save it.

After that, go back into recovery Console, copy the now reduced System Hive
back to System, and then reboot!

The results are astounding! I pared a 14.5mb system hive down to 1.5mb! (On
a user's computer) and a 7.8mb hive down to 6.5mb! IN the first case it
recovered his SQL installation! And he is up and running! ON the second it
made a member server boot a lot faster! Even tho the reduction was just
1.2mb!

I have searched MS' site, and found nothing on this, but so far so good! No
loss of functionality, and all of a sudden the boot is a lot faster and the
system a lot leaner!

If anyone has seen this before, please let me know. My occupation is
keeping these machines running and so far, we are hitting on all cylinders.
But it has been but a day. We will whip the server around to make sure all
is well, but if you know of something I have overlooked, let me know!

This works in 2K and XP (not NT as it does not have that feature - recovery
console, but maybe with some tweaking it can be done...I have just not
tested there yet).

Constructive input gladly accepted!

And I am guinea pigging this! So far so good!

Thanks
George
