Internet Security Systems Protection Brief
November 29, 2004
Microsoft WINS Server Vulnerability
Summary:
X-Force is tracking a vulnerability in Microsoft.s Windows Internet Naming
Service (WINS) Server. A buffer overflow conditions exists within the WINS
server as a result of a pointer hijack. Successful exploitation of this
vulnerability will allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code. The
WINS service is not installed in any default OS configuration, but is
commonly used on Windows domain controller servers. At the time of
publication, no vendor-supplied patch is available for this issue.
Business Impact:
WINS is often running on critical network infrastructure such as Windows
domain controller servers. It is potentially possible for an attacker to
compromise an entire Windows domain through this vulnerability. Successful
exploitation of the WINS buffer overflow vulnerability could be leveraged
to gain SYSTEM privileges. This would grant an attacker complete control
over the target system, and might lead to malware installation, exposure
of confidential information, or further network compromise.
