No, actually the backup is more like tar ...|openssl ...|dd ...|
tee /dev/nsa0 |md5
But yeah, for the disk, you're right:
dd if=/dev/urandom | tee /dev/ad2 | md5
Then:
dd if=/dev/ad2 | md5
and compare.
