Wow... this generated way more of a thread than I anticipated.

I'm going with my pgp idea from my 2nd post in this thread. It's pretty much
the only idea I've come up with that is secure and doesn't require an external
method of authentication. No, I'm not opposed to external auth, it's just not
    an option in this case.

... The PGP part is included as part of the 'sig line', it's an electronic signature in effect, it's similar in effect to MD5 Hash numbers - not only would the signature need to match but the whole message bit-for-bit, just one altered character and it wont match. ... It also adds the problem that, should someone who is protected with a PGP key wish to do something that they claim isn't them, they simply don't use the PGP encrypter and/or use another name. ... Why would someone attribute their name to something they would not want to be linked to, without a hells chance of proving they *didn't* post it, surely they would just call themselves "Mick" and use either a half decent nntp server or Google groups and hush-mail?!... ... Of course headers could have been forged to make it look as if someone else had sent the message, but then server logs would show if the message had actually been sent via the suggested server etc. ...
