     passwd_format string md5 The encryption format that new or
                                           changed passwords will use. Valid
                                           values include "des", "md5" and
                                           "blf". NIS clients using a
                                           non-FreeBSD NIS server should prob-
                                           ably use "des".

...where 'blf' stands for Blowfish. Make sure you run 'cap_mkdb
/etc/login.conf' after you edit the file. BTW, I'm not sure when this was
introduced; the machine I'm getting this info from is a 4.4-STABLE machine
from mid-October.
