You should boot the box with some install floppies and the fixit floppy so
that you can mount / or /var and look at the actual log messages without
being interrupted by anything. I've found that the daily security run
output is almost never the complete log, just the juicy parts to catch
your attention. If you could send the /var/log/messages section around
when that happened, it could help determine the problem.
