Assuming it's a Cisco router you can load a Firewall IOS image which has
firewall capabilities.

of protection each asset or category of assets have, and potentially how

Depends on the router, but it should be in the vendor's documentation

came with the device. That, along with the saved configuration should

part of your disaster recovery package...
