Thank you all for your time and feedback.
From the various answers I received, Smoothwall
(http://www.smoothwall.org/) seems to be a good solution for a
cost-effective SOHO firewall, with good support from the community.
OpenBSD with pf (http://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/) also may be a good fit.
