Disagree & agree w/ Allan. Hmmm... wonder how many spouting off about certs have one or more? Which?
I have a great memory (usually) and always test well. I didn't study for the CISSP (much) and passed. But unlike most multiple choice tests I've taken, there were *very* few "gimme" questions on that test. I had no idea walking out if I passed. Each question made you think and analyze.
That said, analyzing and trying to deduce the real intent of the question author is a *lot* different (is it?) than the type of analytical thinking we need to do in our work. And the fact that I passed w/o much study makes me think a little less of that cert (hush ... don't tell employer!) Of course, I have many many years experience in several subject domains and sure don't think just anyone can walk in and pass. (Maybe I'm special! ;)))
I agree of course with the importance/value of being able to locate/recognize/use resources rather than depend on it all being in your head. Life and career is not a closed book exam, therefore unlike certification process. Have to say tho that a big cache of knowledge fuels that analytical thinking -- can't find everything on Google you know.
Cheers,
Svyato
PS: Certainly some of the smartest tech. people I know, including him with most overwhelming raw intellect, have no degree or cert.
