                 March 24th, 2003 --- Darmstadt, Germany

         IEEE Computer Society Task Force on Information Assurance
                          in cooperation with the
        ACM Special Interest Group on Security, Audit, and Control

  Background

Information Assurance (IA) represents a relatively new research area which
as yet lacks formal definition and is dependent on many underlying
Information Technology areas to succeed. At present, many efforts to effect
IA focus narrowly on one or another of these underlying technologies. The
need for a comprehensive, systems approach to IA is required if IA is to
succeed. This workshop serves as an open forum to discuss IA perspectives
on the underlying technologies, to review the definition of IA, and to
promote development of IA technology and standards impacting real-world
needs such as in Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP).

  Overview

The IEEE Task Force on Information Assurance is sponsoring a workshop on
information assurance in cooperation with the ACM SIGSAC on research and
experience in information assurance. The workshop seeks submissions from
academia and industry presenting novel research on all theoretical and
practical aspects of IA; possible topics include, but are not limited to
the following:

  - Information Warfare and Operations
  - Network Security
  - Operating System Security
  - Storage Security
  - Intrusion Detection, Prediction, and Countermeasures
  - Insider Attack Countermeasures
  - Information Sharing in Coalition Settings
  - Security Models
  - Survivability and Resilient Systems
  - Formal Methods for Security
  - CCITSE Experience and Methodology
  - IA Standardization Approaches
  - Specification, Design, Development, and Deployment of IA Mechanisms

Papers with a systems perspective are especially welcome. In addition to
the dissemination of new research, another goal of the workshop is to bring
together researchers and practicioners from both governmental and civilian
areas. While observers are welcome, overall attendance is limited. Please
contact the workshop chairs if you wish to attend as an observer.

Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Press in a proceedings volume.

Submissions must not substantially duplicate work that any of the authors
has published elsewhere or has submitted in parallel to any other
conference or workshop with proceedings. The paper must list all authors
and their affiliates on a separate ***; in case of multiple authors, the
contact author must be indicated. The paper itself must be blinded. It
should begin with a title, a short abstract, and a list of key words, and
its introduction should summarize the contributions of the paper at a level
appropriate for a non-specialist reader. Submissions should have at most
15 pages excluding the bibliography and appendices (using 10pt body text
and two-column layout), and at most 20 pages total. Authors are responsible
for obtaining appropriate clearances; authors of accepted papers will be
asked to sign IEEE copyright release forms. Submissions not meeting these
guidelines risk rejection without consideration of their merits.
