It is, for a couple of reasons. One of it is stateful inspection (which
does not only work for tcp btw.).

For starter try the manpages, they are the best introduction i can
think of for somebody already familiar with ipchains.

After that try some docs from netfilter-homepage:

        http://netfilter.samba.org/documentation/

They have some links to tutorials, too.
